Joke Party Retirement

Have you thought of writing one of your own?

Melvin Helitzer, author of Comedy Writing Secrets, states that the skillful use of humor can create respect, cause your words to be remembered, and earn you great rewards. He states, “ It is psychologically impossible to hate someone with whom you have laughed.” You may gain a new career as a humor writer!

Mel states that the cardinal rule of humor is creating surprise. To Mel, a joke is a story and a surprise ending is almost always its finale. Here is Mel’s joke formula:

1. Target- base your material on an important target shared with your intended audience, this is the common bridge between performer and audience.

2. Hostility- we use humor to eradicate hostile feelings. Remove sexual frustration, financial concerns, authority frustration or address joke party retirement concerns!

3. Realism and exaggeration- this is a 2 step process: state some common expected outcome with a cliché usually, then in the last word or two, change the expected ending to a surprise.

4. Emotion and surprise- build emotional tension with the hostility we used in step 2 like a balloon that we continue to blow into, then finally bursting it making the audience laugh.

Showing respect for their fallen comrade, the other five continue playing, standing up. Finkelstein looks around and asks, "So who's gonna tell the wife?"

They draw straws. Goldberg picks the short one.

They tell him to be discreet, be gentle, don't make the bad situation any worse. "Discreet? I'm the most discreet mensch you'll ever meet. Discretion is my middle name. Leave it to me."

Goldberg goes over to the Meyerwitz apartment and knocks on the door. The wife answers and asks what he wants.

Goldberg declares, "Your husband just lost $500 and is afraid to come home."

The wife says, "Tell him to drop dead."

"I'll go tell him," says Goldberg. from Orilea, BC
