Motor Home Living
Are you considering motor home living full-time as a retirement choice?
Escapees RV Club, a business serving 34, 000 travelers, states that approximately 9 million RV owners live in the US, with an estimated one million living in their recreational vehicle full time.
This lifestyle though growing is not new. It is common to meet people who have been full timing for 8 to 10 years in their retirement.
Some simply enjoy the adrenalin of new places and people, others combine work and travel. The combinations are endless.
If you are contemplating this life style, take into account the following questions:
Is it both partners’ passion, if not, how do you decide when to stop?
Usually, there is one partner who loves this concept more than the other. To create a win-win situation, decide how long you will pursue motor home living and when you will re-evaluate to make sure it meets the needs of both of you.
How will you manage to live together in close quarters 24 hours a day?
One of the blessings and one of the challenges is the closeness that you share. Each of us needs time alone, retirement is no different, so this will be one area that your partner and you will need to discuss to find out how to make it work.
Also, you will need to discuss how to live together when one partner is neat while the other likes to spread their treasures out. Motor home space is at a premium!
How are you going to deal with your home, furniture and possessions?
Some people chose to sell their home, putting their furniture and personal effects into storage while they travel. Others have an auction sale that sells everything. Some keep certain items, spread others among children and sell the rest. What suits you?
How do you keep in touch with family and friends?
You may need to speak with family and friends daily, weekly or monthly. Others may be content to email occasionally to update acquaintances. Email, cell phones, calling cards, payphones and satellite systems offer many alternatives.
How do you handle mail?
Your mail could be gathered by family and friends and sent to you at various locations. You could consider a mail box at a local outlet that will send your mail when you notify them of your destination. Consider converting invoices and notifications to email to eliminate a substantial part of snail mail.
What do you want to use for a vehicle when you are stationary?
Motor home living remains interesting when you use a vehicle for local travel. Your options include: bicycles, motorcycles, scooters, cars and trucks that are towed behind the motor home. Some big rigs tow a trailer that holds several types of vehicles: a car, motorcycles, dune buggies.
Motor home living conjures up these images: sitting beside your motor home watching the sunsets along the ocean, or parking along a beautiful mountain lake breathing the fresh, clean air.
Others think of enjoying the snow bird lifestyle, following the sun.
If you are thinking the word “retirement,” consider motor home living as you design a new phase of excitement, fun and purpose. View retirement as a second career where you can express parts of yourself that have not been visible before. Combine your new career with travel that can delight and enthrall you.
