7 steps to make retirement the most exciting phase of growth of your life

Discover how you can treat retirement as a new beginning.

From the desk of Hugh and Joanne Wiley,

Dear Reader,

Are you one of the growing numbers of people reaching the age of retirement?

You may be surprised to know that realizing your retirement dreams and wishes is more a state of mind than your financial affairs.

Although having savings is important, your view of retirement is even more important. Commonly, the biggest myth about retirement tells you to relax, put your feet up and “take it easy.” But there are different trends. Check out this excerpt from a study by AIG Sun America 2002:

“There is a new vision of retiring emerging. For many, retirement no longer means to ‘withdraw’, ‘disappear’, ‘wind down’ or ‘stop’. It now means new beginnings, continued productivity and personal reinvention.”

But how do you bring this into your life when your schedule and others’ demands have dominated?

How do you find those latent gifts, those unexpressed desires that bring so much joy when they are articulated?

We are glad to tell you that bringing about others’ reinvention provides us with our joy, purpose and passion.
Hugh, a psychologist, moved to a retirement community, and found his practice filling with retired people who were bored, depressed as they lived out the myth of “taking it easy.”

Joanne, as a nurse practitioner observed the health changes of unfulfilled seniors. The strategies that we used to energize, encourage, and redirect our wonderful clients, we bring to this website.

We all need to be challenged and growing, all of us, no exceptions!

“Ageless explorers,” (a term from the AIG Sun America study) describes the group of seniors who “never feel elderly inside, generally feel comfortable with their retirement finances and rarely feel pessimistic about the future.”

We could really identify with this group as we changed our way of life entirely as retirement approached. We looked at what we love to do but haven’t truly expressed yet, and formed a way of life that delights us to this day.

We launched writing, training and coaching careers and have been working at seminars, writing, researching and interviewing. We incorporated this lifestyle with traveling in a motor coach enjoying many interesting places as we work.

Our research brought us in touch with many “Ageless Explorers” who had enthusiasm but didn’t always know how to express it. They had no real way to prepare and transition.

And that is why we wrote our workbook Beyond Your Career: Reinventing Retirement to help you explore new vistas and adventures, to find your purpose, passion and heighten your love of life!

You will have a plan to help you discover those things that will give you challenge, purpose, self-expression, creativity and fulfillment. This is your opportunity to create your unique personal re-invention.

What others are saying.

My favourite part was “Finding What Fits.” They were such helpful questions, I was surprised that I loved Planet Earth so much, and am pleased at my plan to be environmentally conscious.

Because I am visually oriented—the collage of the future” idea is excellent for me. Every page of your workbook is invaluable and is an excellent tool to move forward not only to retirement, but as a “life tool” to enable successful movement through all of our transitions/changes. It is an exciting adventure.
