Retirement Party Idea

When deciding on your retirement party idea, consider the following:

• Likes and dislikes of the retiree,

• His/her comfort level with crowds

• The number of people that this person impacts.

• How you can best honor their accomplishments

• How you can share with them what their impact has been on you.

There might be a new retirement party idea here--read on.

John, age 65, and a bus driver, retired after 25 years. He told everyone he really didn’t want a party. Conspiring with his wife, his co-workers arranged to meet the couple at a local Chinese restaurant that he enjoyed.

His eyes grew larger and larger as more of his co-workers entered and sought them out. The evening’s entertainment was the telling of favorite stories about John.

At the end of the evening, with tears in his eyes, he revealed how meaningful the evening was for him. Each person later described the evening as a tender, touching time with John.

Allan, a public health inspector, ended his career at age 65. His coworkers booked an evening at the best restaurant in town. The menu had been decided with his wife, so that his favorite dishes would be on hand at the buffet.

The speeches honored Allan, and took the form of a roast. Allan’s interests included sports and fitness, and his co-workers enjoyed teasing him about his devotion to his schedule, his rigorous training program and his unique diet of sardines and tofu cheese during training.

Allan stood up well to the roasting. The event was declared a success.

Debbie retired as a human resources trainer at 55. Her party was a gala event at a local golf and country club with a sit down meal.

The agenda included speeches and culminated with a humorous skit that was the highlight of the evening. The skit was videotaped and presented to Debbie who was delighted with the antics of her co-workers.

Jeannie, a manager of several sites, was honored by afternoon teas that took place at each of the various organizations during the last week of her career.

“Each one of the areas wanted to tell Jeannie how we enjoyed working with her, though she was tearful each time, more people were able to attend,” stated a colleague.
